Fertility treatment has evolved significantly over the past few decades and for many patients the journey to parenthood now begins in a laboratory. The process most commonly recommended for complex fertility cases involves stimulating the ovaries with hormone injections over approximately ten to fourteen days to encourage the development of multiple mature eggs. Regular monitoring through blood tests and ultrasound scans allows the clinical team to track progress and adjust the stimulation protocol as needed.

Once the eggs reach the appropriate size and maturity a retrieval procedure is performed under light sedation. The retrieved eggs are then fertilized in the laboratory using either conventional insemination or ICSI depending on the specific circumstances of the case. The resulting embryos are cultured and monitored over five to six days as they develop to the blastocyst stage.

This entire process known as in vitro fertilization treatment gives fertility specialists complete control over fertilization and embryo development in a way that natural conception simply cannot replicate. One or more viable embryos are selected for transfer to the uterus in a simple procedure that does not require sedation. Any remaining high quality embryos can be frozen for future use. A pregnancy test is typically performed approximately ten to fourteen days after the transfer to confirm the outcome of the cycle.
