Jesper Voxnaes, the designer behind such popular blades as the CRKT Pilar and the Viper Knives Vox Fortis Flipper, is known for his insightful and practical designs. 

At one point, he had a vision to create a small knife with a utilitarian blade that, despite its diminutive stature, still offered a full handle grip. 

It’s exactly what he pulled off in the Fox Knives Suru series. If you’re looking to upgrade your current EDC loadout with a small folder that handles like a much bigger knife, it might be a great option. Here’s what you should know about it. 

Getting Familiar with the Suru 

The heart of the Fox Knives Suru is its 2.36” drop point blade with thumb holes (which are naturally ambidextrous), very in league with many of the other compact folders and fixed blades out there that are commonly carried as EDC knives. 

Aesthetically and practically, this blade profile (and size, for that matter) is highly utilitarian, but the steel is another thing: you’re liable to encounter it in M398. 

M398 is a powder metallurgy steel that is similar to M390, but which exhibits higher wear-resistance, which gives the Suru an impressive ability not just to take, but to hold an edge.

It gets this hardness and toughness from a combination of molybdenum and vanadium (of which there is quite a concentration in the alloy) along with a smidge of tungsten, which strengthens the steel as well. 

Also, as a result of a healthy concentration of chromium (at 20%, in fact) M398 is shockingly corrosion resistant. So what you get in the Fox Knives Suru is a tiny knife that offers the holy trinity of knife steel attributes: edge retention, general toughness, and corrosion resistance. 

The steel alone validates the price of this knife, but in terms of general ergonomics, its value only continues to grow.

That’s because the true calling card of this tiny knife is its larger-than-expected handle. It’s available in several different colors and in a few different materials, but among the more common is the Rhodoid block configuration. 

Rhodoid is a dense, strong synthetic that like other scale materials such as G10 or Micarta will never need any maintenance, and which is not prone to the rot of natural scale materials. 

But, more importantly, the Suru has a large, palm-filling handle, much larger than you’d expect in a knife of this size. And, considering the fact that one of the most common gripes about tiny knives is that they have commensurately tiny handles, this is a welcome relief from the norm. 

In other words, while the Suru is a small knife, it handles like one that is much larger, thanks to its stout handle and surprisingly (for its size) stout blade. 

On top of that, some other things you’ll appreciate are the convenience of the pocket clip, the smooth deployment, and the strong lock; it’s a frame lock, which is convenient, familiar, and easy to use, but stronger than a liner lock.

All in all, it’s a great little knife that you can put to big jobs. You just need to know where to get one.
