The most iconic is the handheld satellite phone, a ruggedized device that provides voice and low-speed data capabilities. For broadband data, the terminals are more complex. In the maritime industry, this is typically a domed, gyrostabilized antenna that can maintain a lock on the satellite even as the ship rolls and pitches in the waves. In the aviation industry, it is a specially designed antenna that can be mounted on the fuselage of the aircraft. For land-mobile applications, this could be a vehicle-mounted antenna that automatically deploys, or a new generation of low-profile, flat-panel antennas. This user terminal is not just an antenna; it includes the modem and the networking hardware needed to create a local Wi-Fi or Ethernet network, allowing multiple users and devices to share the satellite connection.
